What's up with... your Bible? It seems our world is getting busier and more hectic all the time. We all have the most modern conveniences and still we do not have enough time in the week or room on our schedules. Since time is definitely a seemingly short commodity, something usually gets short changed. The most urgent things on our "to do" list always get done... they're a must! Some of the less urgent things, that are not humanly speaking "urgent", don't get done. One of the things that are often left for "another time"--a time when we have more--is our study of God's Word.
By inspiration giv'n! Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine To guide our souls to heav'n. (CW 284v.1) The Bible is often the best kept book in our homes. Our bibles are often put away for "special" events, family gatherings or the pastor's visit. The hymn writer above reminds us that the Word which we all have is "precious". It is special because it is God speaking to us. It is like a bright lamp, call it a spotlight, to guide us in our daily life. It guides us to our eternal goal.
Our gloomy world to cheer Displays a Savior's boundless love And brings his glories near. (CW 284v.2) Everyday we find ourselves in all kinds of situations. We hear the news about the war in Iraq, we remember a loved one who passed away, we feel down because of our situation in life, a grandparent or parent is sick with no hope for recovery. Our daily life is filled with all kinds of struggles, strife and situations. You have been there; maybe you are there now. The Bible is God's Word. It puts the proper perspective on our everyday struggles. During those struggles the Bible points us to the all important Savior's boundless love. In other words the Bible, always points us to the Savior who stretched out his arms on the cross and showed us just how much he loved us.
And where our feet have trod But brings to view the matchless grace Of a forgiving God. (CW 284v.3) Then there are those days when we sin (hard as we try, we can't avoid it)... days the devil reminds us of past sins. The Bible reminds us of those sins too (Check out Exodus 20). The Bible also beautifully shows the matchless grace of a forgiving God.
Of life shall guide our way Till we behold the clearer light Of an eternal day. (CW 284v.4) The Bible, is that Lamp that stays lighted through all our life. The Bible is that spotlight that guides us through the storms, fogs and hurricanes of life, bringing us to the clearer light Of an eternal day. So what's up with your Bible? Are you using yours? This month starts our schedule of Bible study again. So this article reminds you of the importance of Bible reading and Bible study in your life. Get that Bible out and use it. Bring it to church for Sunday morning study. Open that Bible for our call-in bible study! There really is no excuse for not using the Bible. There really is no reason for not joining us for Bible study. It's fun... really! Pastor Jeffrey D. Wegner
